MEMBER ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Christina Zei
VISUAL ARTIST
I focus on the process rather than the end result, which is an important step in creating. This is the essence of my works.
Colour is the ultimate transformation of how I paint and stimulates a visual and emotional interest in the viewer.
“Colour helps to penetrate the two dimensions. It creates a depth of the inner self like a contemplative quality, creating a peaceful state. It is an appreciation for the moment in time.“
Who or what are your main creative influences, and why?
I’m influenced by a combination of Impressionism as it relates to light and colour and Expressionism in helping to create intense emotions.
I am not interested in depicting reality but rather in creating subjective emotions and responses. Qualities I seek are personal and spontaneous, reflecting at times, social change and/or spirituality.
What has been your most rewarding/fulfilling experience so far as an artist?
IBeing an artist is not the sum total of my being. It’s a passion!
I find drawing very grounding and am driven by the process of creating images. Through my images I open up a dialogue.
I use all media and feel the strong technical overlaps between them.
What do you find most challenging about being an artist?
I personally don’t feel challenged because my art is my passion. It is something I have to do.
What are you currently working on? Do you have an upcoming exhibition?
I’m currently using pencils of all varieties. Coloured, Aquarelle, oil-based, graphite, pen and ink, charcoal and other similar tools. I am not planning any solo exhibition at this stage.
