Leanne O'Toole
With a career in garment design and making it was no surprise that wearables was my entry into the art world. My first artist collaborations led to an interest in felting; then workshops at various forums have added techniques associated with metal work, fabric manipulation, printing, and dyeing. Generally, all these new techniques and knowledge was still being applied to wearables until the 2020 lockdown reawakened the pleasure of “slow stitch” and working within themes.
However, the cross over into the world of 2D art forms has had its challenges and this is where creating journals has helped break that barrier. Not all pages need to be the same, some pages have come from favourite magazines, some created from disused patterns and some fabric pages used for that stitch work. So, not all needs to be words or pictures drawn with a pencil.
Most of my works now reflect the vulnerability of our planet and all that is on it, and I am exploring working with threads (hand and machine stitched), and beads as my mediums of choice, either creating or enhancing the images.
But I will always come back to the wearable – printed metal earrings, felted pieces, remnant clothing.
